In the Spotlight – Brent Rice (Coach)

Brent Rice | Coach.

CV: Under 9s Coach

What is your coaching philosophy?

BR: Team first, focus on individual improvement, master the fundamentals.
In the younger age groups, it’s important that players learn the team dynamic – what their role is, how they can support others, how to anticipate the play, how working together is a huge advantage. Every child is different and develops at their own pace, but playing as a unit gives every kid an opportunity to benefit from the team, and thrive as players.

What do you enjoy about coaching?

BR: I enjoy the progress the players make each week – the growth in their confidence and skills, and seeing the team work together.

At this age, huge improvements can take place over the course of a season, and there’s a point when they start to realise it. It’s rewarding to see kids having fun and getting better. Enjoyment comes with improvement – no matter how experienced or talented they are. My goal is to ensure they’re making that improvement.

Why do you volunteer and support the NSBJRLC?

BR: My son is the main reason. When I played as a kid, my Dad was always involved as a manager or coach – so I’ve always been keen to do the same. I get lots of enjoyment coaching him and his mates.

I also enjoy being a part of the Brothers Community. We live in the area, it’s a great club and everyone is really warm and welcoming. Rugby league has played a huge role in my life growing up, so I’m totally up for giving back what little I can to support the game and this club.
